Club
History
In 1984, the Rotary Club of Marina
City, the brainchild of the Rotary Club Singapore East, was
organised under the guidance of the late PDG Dr. M.G.
John.
1984-1986: The Club
received its Charter on 20th December 1984, with Hector Charles as
its Charter President and 36 members. The same evening S$2,000 was
donated to the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Associations (SANA) for its
"Adopt an Addict Scheme". S$10,000was also raised that year from a
High Tea cum Fashion Show and donated to Woodlands Home for the Aged
for the renovation of its multi-purpose hall. The Interact Club of
Dunman Secondary School was formed and a match-club arrangement was
signed with the Rotary Club of Paraiso, Q.C. in the
Philippines.
1986-1987: Dr. John Chong becomes
the second President of our Club. We jointly hosted the 53rd RI
District 330 Assembly with the Rotary Club of Singapore East that
year. S$9,000 were raised through a walkathon and the amount was
donated to the Canossian School for the Hearing Impaired to purchase
hearing aids for children. The "host Courteous Employee Award" was
created that year and given for the first time to an employee of
Singapore Air Terminal Services (SATS). A match-club arrangement was
signed with the Rotary Club of Darwin South and a second Interact
club, the Interact Club of St. Thomas Secondary School was
formed.
1987-1988: John Chan was President. We staged the
play "Emily of Emerald Hill" raising $50.000. This was donated to
SANA for its fight against drug abuse. We hosted the District 330
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) and organised a "World
Peace and Understanding Day" for the Rotary Clubs of Singapore. Our
sister clubs increased to four when we signed agreements with the
Rotary Club of Dusit in Bangkok and the Rotary Club of Osaka-Oyodo
in Japan. The club was recognized that year with the N Presidential Citation.
1988-1989: Our
Club's fourth President was Dr Kwok Wai Mun. we sponsored a new
Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Serangoon Gardens. We raised $14.000
that year for the Computer Appreciation Programme of the Singapore
Children's Society, and also participated in a World Community
Service Project for the Salvation with Districts 94, 946 and 947 in
Australia. Our Club Song was inaugurated that year.
1989-1990: Lawrence
Cheng as President. That year, we raised $10.000 for the Singapore
Council of Social Services' Youth Volunteer Training Programme. The
bulletin in its present form, was first published on a weekly basis
and a Rotary Pen Set was designed and sold to raise
funds.
1990-1991: The
6th President ouf our Club was Dr. K.A. Abraham. That year, members
together with Interactors painted Mother Teresa's Home in Jalan
Seranggong. A job estimated at $20.000 was completed at below
$4.000. We assembled 1.800 units of litter pickers and donated it to
the Ministry of the Environment for "Adopt a Beach and Park" Day as
part of our effort to Preserve Planet Earth. We raised cash and
relief items (in a joint project with the Rotary Club of
Osaka-Oyodo) for the earthquake victims in Baguio in the
Philippines. A second Vocational Service Award "Excellence in
Customer Service" was created for Changi International Airport
Services (CIAS). A match-club signed with the Rotary Club of
Pontian.
1991-1992: Mr. Sim Teow Gok was
President. A free medical check-up for senior citizens was the
first arrangement that year for Kim Seng Constituency. $2.000 was
raised and contributed for printing information leaflets to raise
public awareness of autistic children. We assisted in the
fund-raising project for Tampines East Community Centre. The Club's
first Rotaract Club was launched that year and the Club won the
District Best Bulletin Award.
1992-1993: S.N. Samy was President in our 8th year. In
that year we received two District awards - the Best Community
Service Project for the Medical Check-up for Senior Citizens of Kim
seng Constituency and for the 2nd year, we won the District Bet
Bulletin Award.
1993-1994: Sunny
Bay was our Club's 9th President. We organized a charity dinner in
conjunction with the "Miss Singapore Pageant Grand Finals' from
which we raised $60,000 to purchase a specially fitted ambulance for
the Handicap's Welfare Association. The Club, for the first time,
emerged overall champion in the Annual Inter-Club Rotary Games. The
Rotaract Club was revamped by the Youth Service Committee. We were
again awarded the District Best Bulletin Award.
1994-1995: N.T.Nair became our Club's 10th President. Community service
projects included organizing a free medical screening for Senior
Citizens of Marine Parade GRC and donating a pair of calipers to a
polio victim. In December, the club celebrated its 10th anniversary,
joined by several members of our sister clubs from Dusit,
Osaka-Oyodo, Paraiso and Pontian. A new Rotaract Club, the Rotaract
Club of Temasek Polytechnic was formed and we received 3 district
awards, viz The President Citation Award for Community Concern,
Significant Achievement Award for publishing "Basic Information on
RI and the Rotary Foundation" and Best Bulletin Award
1995-1996: The Club's President was Leong Cheng Chit. Together with two
other Rotry Clubs, we continued free medical screening for Senior
Citizens of Kim Seng Community Centre. We received a
Presidential Citation and won the District Best Bulletin Award
for the fourth time.
1996-1997: Dr. Thomas Cherian was at the helm in the
Club's 12th year. The Club raised enough funds to purchase
a haemodialysis machine, which was donated to the RC of
Pontian, Johore for their dialysis centre. A braille reading machine
was donated to the RC of Dusit, Thailand for the Bangkok School for
the Blind. We also organized the Inter-City Rotary Foundation Day
meeting in Singapore and a New Generations Conference for the
Rotaractors of Temasek Polytechnic. We won the District Best
Bulletin Award for the 5th year runnin.
1997-1998: Yong Teck Yu was the Club's 13th President. A sister-club
arrangement was signed with the Rotary Club of Kuching Jaya. Funds
raised were donated to the Riding Disabled Association (RDA). In his
year, we admitted ladies to the Club for the first time.
1998-1999: Jagjit Singh Bajaj was the Club's 14th president. During his
term, the venue for the weekly club meetings was changed to the
Conrad International. HE Mr. Raymond Loretan, the Swiss Ambassador
to Singapore became our Honorary Member. we received a Presidential
citation together with an award for jointly holding the convention's
inter-city meeting at the Conrad. We continued being patrons of RDA
and saw the completion of the matching grant tubal ligation project
in the Philippines.
1999-2000: The 15th President of the Club was Roberto Fabbri. Marina
City participated in a joint community service projct with our
sister Club of Dusit in starting a 'chicken and fish' project
in Bangkok, Thailand. The revenue obtained from selling the
eggs and the fish was used to assist poor students in their school
fees and to subsidize their lunches. A Christmas party was organized
at the Conrad Hotel (with kind courtesy) for 40 children from our
Rotary Family Centre. The elderly from the Rotary Family Centre were
also treated to the 'Hong Bao Show' by the Singapore riverside
during the Chinese New Year period. The Club continued to support
the RDA in their Barn Dance Event and Flag Day. We also presented
$2,000 to the RDA.
2000-2001: The 16th President was our Charter President Hector Charles.
Our bulletin got us an award. Members gave wholehearted support for
the RDA Flag Day and Carnival. We gave $2,000 from our sunshine box
to the Gujarat Earthquake victims, and donated US$1,000 to the
Leukemia Children's project by awarding a PHF to our program
director, Vijay Menon. We also participated in sending a group of
college students to Kuching for community service, a meaningful
projct for both club and students. Our President also led a
GSE team to Oregon USA.
2001-2002: Dr. Kwok Wai Mun was the 17th President of the Club. Marina
city was awarded the Distinguished Club Presidential Citation as
well as the Distinguished Club President Presidential Citation by
R.I. President Richard King. Seven new members were inducted and we
won the District Best Bulletin Award for the year. Three new PHFs
were added to our list. We donated $1000/- each to the flood victims
of Northern Thailand, the Afghan refugees, and the Career Guidance
Seminar of Dunman Secondary School. A Charity Walkathon and Treasure
Hunt was organized and our club raised more than $11,000 for the
Rotary Family Service Centre.
2002-2003: Jimmy F. Doctor was the 18th President of the Club. During
his term of office, our Club was awarded the 2002-2003 Presidential
Citation by R.I. President Bhichai Rattakul. Five new P.H.F.s of
US$1,000.00 each were added to our growing list of donors, out of
which three were used for a Matching Grant with the R.C. of Delhi
Safdarjung in India, where we helped to donate an instrument costing
US$12,000 fo performing cataract operations on the poor villagers in
Northern India. The other two were use for POLIOPLUS. We donated
S$1,000 to our sister club R.C. of Dusit in Thailand to buy 25
bicycles for the poor villagers from North of Chiang Mai. We donated
S$750.00 each to the Rainbow Club and our sister club, R.C. of
Pontian and we donated S$500.00 to the Bali Fund. We also donated
S$1,500.00 to the Dunman Secondary School. And, we added one more
Interact Club to our list, when we chartered 'SAINTS INTERACT CLUB'
at St. Andrews Secondary School, Singapore.
2003-2004: The 19th President of the Club is Madhusudan M.
Patel. Awards during the year, apart from the Presidential
Citation: 1. RI & District Award for inducting the highest
number of members 2. Rotary Foundation 2003-2004 Annual Giving
per Capita Award 3. District Award for the 2nd highest number of
Paul Harris Fellow despite club size (11 PHF) Fund raising event
- Fiesta Latino MardiGras Nite - held in support of Autism
Association of Singapore. Amount raised was S$ 25,000. 350 rotarians
and friends attended the event. The club hosted a day out including
lunch for 150 children from Canossian Sisters Orphanage & Hari
Prasad Children's Home at Pasta Fresca @ East Coast
Parkway. Indonesia being our largets neighbour, we signed a
sister club relationship with Jakarta Central. Together with 5 other
clubs, Rotary Club of Marina City hosted the World Understandung and
Peace Day Forum cum lunch on February 23rd 2004. Some of the
projects include S$8001 & S$5000 to the Family Service Centre,
S$5075 to our sister Pontian Club Dialysis Centre, S$4000 to Dusit
Club Projects, S$5000 to Dunman Secondary School needy students,
US$500, S$801, US$500+S$500, S$801, S$2001 to Batam Seaweed plot,
Sabah Ambulance, Phil Housing/Landslide, Iran Earthquake &
Golden Triangle Akha Hill Tribe Children respectively. Rotary Club
of Marina City total projects and cash contributions for the year amounted to about
S$80,000.
2004-2005: The 20th President of the Club is Lee Lye
Wah. We baought and donated a S$14,000 tonometer, an eye machine
for early detection of blindness to the Singapore Association of the
Visually Handicapped. To our sister Rotary Club of Dusit, Bangkok,
we contributed S$4000 for their "Magic Eye" project for the blind.
we also gave S$1000 to our sister Rotary Club of Jakarta Central for
their "Aid" project. In Phillipines, we donated S$4000 for "Build a
Home" project ad another S$500 for a "Pump" project. In addition, we
sponsored US$2000 through a private bank for a charity golf
tournament organised by Rotary Club in Jakarta in aid of the needy
and poor in Indonesia. During the Tsunami disaster, we donated
10,000 'body bags' and medical supplies to the victims in Ache,
Indoesia - a financial disaster relief project with our sister Rotary Club of Jakarta Central.
2005-2006: The
